When we took on this project, the client sat in 3rd place for overall popularity and SEO rankings within their industry – tax refund services. The leading competitor also commanded a brand name with roughly 10 times the search volume, automatically putting us in the underdog position, especially given that brand search volume remains one of the key ranking factors in 2026. While we launched brand-building tactics immediately, we knew this would be a long-term effort. So in parallel, we focused on what we believed to be the true foundation of strong SEO: service pages built specifically for the target audience, grounded in semantic SEO principles, designed around high-engagement best practices, and covering each topic comprehensively. We applied this approach to every “Tax Refund [COUNTRY]” page – and within less than a year, we reached top 1-2 positions for 80% of these pages.
Another crucial part was TOPICAL AUTHORITY. One of the biggest challenges in SEO is knowing where topical authority ends and topical dilution begins. For this Tax Refund Service project, we intentionally focused on building comprehensive topical coverage around tax refunds, tax rebates, refund eligibility, claim processes, tax codes, filing requirements, refund timelines, and related user concerns. Rather than publishing content on every tax-related subject, we prioritized topics that directly supported the client’s source context and business objectives. Our strategy was to create a tightly connected semantic content network that addressed the complete search journey of potential customers while maintaining strong contextual relevance. Each content asset was designed to strengthen the central entity – tax refunds, through relevant attributes, supporting questions, and interconnected resources. By resisting the temptation to expand into loosely related taxation topics, we preserved topical consolidation, improved relevance signals, and strengthened the website’s authority within its most commercially valuable search landscape. This balance allowed us to maximize visibility without sacrificing contextual focus, plus the conversion rate of the website remained unharmed from the additional information content.
Converting More Visitors Into Leads (CRO Efforts)
Alongside SEO, we continuously optimized the website's conversion paths. Navigation was redesigned around real user behavior and the unique nuances of the tax refund journey, making it easier for visitors to find the right service. We also introduced contextual commercial sidebars within blog articles—not as generic promotional banners, but as natural next steps that aligned with the reader's intent. Priority landing pages were further refined by restructuring content, improving section order, rewriting key messaging, and strengthening introductions to increase engagement. Together, these CRO improvements led to higher user engagement, a stronger conversion rate, and more qualified leads from existing organic traffic.
Total organic traffic isn’t the most critical metric for this project, since the brand focuses on a narrow, well-defined target audience. What matters most here is securing top positions in Google Search and driving high-converting traffic – and on both fronts, we delivered. Resume: 11 of 13 top priority keywords reached No 1-2 positions. Overall SEO traffic increased from 150 to 600 monthly visitors.
